Sea
Angling
There
are unlimited opportunities to the sea angler, who can
find somewhere to fish almost all the year round. The
effect on the Irish sea of a mixed weather of rain and
sun, along with the warming influence from the North
Atlantic Drift means the water can be fished from spring
to late autumn for species found elsewhere only in the
summer months.
Over
100 species can be caught from U.K's seas. And this
fishing is as easily accessible to the angler who seeks
solitude and peace in one of the least populated countries
of Europe as it is to the fisherman who wants to enjoy
sport in the company of other anglers.
Boat
chartering is widely available from a number of centres.
Shark, skate, ling, cod, ray tope and bass are some
of the species caught from marked wrecks and sandy ground.
There
are many marked wrecks off the Irish coat, some lying
in water over 50 fathoms deep. Even though it may take
over an hour to reach these marks, it is worth it! Anglers
who specialise in this fishing use rods in the 20/30lb
class and reel lines of 30lbs test, and such gear may
be hired from charter skippers.
The
processing of licences, where applicable, by the Department
of the Marine is ongoing at this stage. Any vessel required
to be licensed should carry official documentation on
board. It is strongly advised that you confirm with
any operators you may wish to use that they are fully
licensed and approved by the Department of the Marine.
Furthermore, anglers, when commencing their charter
trip, should ask to see the relevant documentation from
the Department of the Marine which should be prominently
displayed on board.

Inland Fishing
Irish
shore angling is among the best in Europe. Almost every
type of shore fishing may be done, for a very wide range
of species, throughout the year.
River and
lake trouting is good from April to September. Salmon
run all year with the season opening on New Year’s Day.
There is no closed season for the other freshwater species
but April to October is generally the better period.
A state licence is required if fishing for salmon or
trout.
There
are over 7,000 miles of riverbank for the coarse angler.
The scale of these waters varies dramatically. Two of
the biggest rivers, the Shannon and the Erne, each comprise
huge systems. In addition to these systems there are
innumerable smaller rivers and loughs. All rich in the
abundance and variety of fish life.
Irish inland waters have retained their pristine quality
as it as has never had a significant degree of heavy
industry, and its inland towns are mainly small. It
is still possible to find yourself a corner of a lough
or river offering you the peace and tranquillity you
have been looking for.
Irish coarse
fishing offers this solitude and tranquility and it
can also offer companionship to those who like to fish
in company. But above all it offers superb fishing.
